Great Wall

Starting from Yalu River in Liaoning Province in the east to Jiayu Pass in Gansu Province in the west, the Great Wall wriggles 8851.8 kilometers across nine provinces, autonomous regions and municipal cities, like a flying dragon in broad North China.

As the most time-consuming and the largest ancient military defense project, the Great Wall is considered one of “the seven architectural wonders of the world”. Over the past 2,000 years, the Great Wall was constructed to a certain degree in different periods during the reign of the ancient Chinese rulers, and its total length over 50,000 kilometers. The Great Wall build in Ming Dynasty, the most time-consuming and largest project, as well of the most perfect defense system and structure in China’s long history, while Badaling is a masterpiece and best preserved section built in the dynasty.

This section of the Great Wall lies in the lofty ridges and towering mountains in Jundu Mountain, Yanqing  County. Initially built in 1505 (the 18th year of the Emperor Hongzhi’s  reign of Ming), it was the outpost of the Juyong Pass and an Important natural barrier to protect the Ming’s capital (today’s Beijing). Badaling is of strategic location and steep topographical features, and a famous statement goes that “the most strategic part of Juyong Pass is not the pass itself but Badaling”. At east and west side of the pass stands one stone gate-tower, respectively, with the board reading “A Town outside Juyong Pass” hanging above the eastern gate and the board bearing “Key Northern Gateway” above the western gate.

Atop the arch-shaped door is a platform, both sides of which are connected to the walls through the opening. Brick crenels are built on the platform. The two gates are linked up by a main road, which is of strategic importance.

The wall stands at an average of 7.8 meters, the base of which is mostly built by huge granite slabs, making the wall body tall and sturdy. Crenels  are set atop the outer wall for observational use. Embrasures are facilitated for shooting arrows. Watchtowers and battlements are build about every 500

meters for providing  accommodation for soldiers, storing weapons and food, and keeping guard.

Badaling with its critical situation and charming scenery, is the earliest section of the Great Wall open to tourists, and also the best known section. Overlooked on the top, the Great Wall, like a flying dragon, winds in the lofty mountains, appearing spectacular.

Great Wall Museum

The Museum sits in the Badaling Section of the Great Wall scenic area, neighboring the Great Wall Circle Cinema. It was built and opened in September 1994, redesigned and renovated in 2007, and was opened  to the public free of charge on 18th May, 2008. Of a unique architectural style, it takes on an external shape of one-piece beacon tower, and has an internal visiting path like the rising and falling horse track on the Great Wall, with every detail showing the profound cultural essence of the Wall. Adopting  the theme of world miracle and history monument, the show consists of four parts, namely,  an unbroken history continuing two thousand years, a grand masterpiece extending one thousand  kilometers, one family on both sides of the Great Wall, and noble spirit lasting forever. It collects cultural relics and samples unearthed alongside the Wall across the country, as well as charts, photos, human culture landscapes and models, plus the use of multimedia means of touch screen and projections , displaying the Wall, a symbol of the Chinese Nation, in an all-round manner.
