Starting from Yalu River in Liaoning Province in the east to Jiayu Pass in Gansu Province in the west, the Great Wall wriggles 8851.8 kilometers across nine provinces, autonomous regions and municipal cities, like a flying dragon in broad North China.
This section of the Great Wall lies in the lofty ridges and towering mountains in Jundu Mountain, Yanqing County. Initially built in 1505 (the 18th year of the Emperor Hongzhi’s reign of Ming), it was the outpost of the Juyong Pass and an Important natural barrier to protect the Ming’s capital (today’s Beijing). Badaling is of strategic location and steep topographical features, and a famous statement goes that “the most strategic part of Juyong Pass is not the pass itself but Badaling”. At east and west side of the pass stands one stone gate-tower, respectively, with the board reading “A Town outside Juyong Pass” hanging above the eastern gate and the board bearing “Key Northern Gateway” above the western gate.
